The Epigraph
King featured a section of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" in the epigraph of The Shining. This is one of Poe's most masterful and chilling stories. The epigraph sets the tone of the story before it even begins. Listen and read along! King refers to Poe's story many times throughout the novel. |
The Stanley Hotel
King based the Overlook on a real hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. The Stanley Hotel has been named one of the most haunted hotels in America. It has been featured on The Travel Channel's "Ghost Hunters" and Syfy's "Ghost Adventures." The hotel offers haunted tours and accommodation packages for the most haunted rooms, like #217.
