- On the way to The Overlook, everyone feels some sense of dread, yet no one talks about it. Why do you think this is? Discuss the emotions in the car
- Halloran takes Danny to his car to talk about the Shining. Why do you think they go to the car?
- Danny remembers being afraid from the story of Bluebeard. In the story, a woman is killed as a result of her curiosity. Consider the conversation in the car between Danny and Halloran. Why does Danny think of this story? Does Danny understand why the story of Bluebeard made such an impact?
- Why do you think Stephen King chose to write from Danny's perspective? Does having the perspective of a child make the story more or less impactful? Do you think the story would be different ifwe did not hear Danny's perspective?
Further Investigation
Blue Beard Listen to the folktale of Blue Beard by Charles Perrault. Danny didn't remember the end of the tale, but maybe the endings of stories aren't always the most important. Danny remembers the pictures from the storybook. This link does not contain images from the book. I (a fully adulted human) could not look at some of them long enough to copy and paste. This one is creepy enough. |
