- Why do you think the Torrence's decide to stay at the Overlook? They initially felt relief when the snow confined them to the hotel. Why do you think Jack felt so motivated to keep his position? Or did he?
- In Chapter 30, Jack experiences several of the terrors that Danny has experienced. How does his reaction differ from Danny's? Compare and contrast.
- Danny's interactions with the hedge animals, woman in 217, and the tunnel creature seem to indicate that supernatural forces are after him specifically. Why do you think these forces, or the hotel embodied, want Danny?
- When the family goes to check on the elevator noise, Jack looks in the compartment and claims he sees nothing inside. Wendy jumps in, finds remnants of a party, and gets mad at Jack for lying. Do you think Jack was lying about what he saw? If so, why?

- Chapter 34 - The Hedges:
- When Danny is playing in one of the concrete tunnels, he realizes he is not alone. Why do you think this terrifying scene was not in the movie?
- In the film, the hedge animals are replaced by a giant hedge maze. Do you think the hedge maze strengthened the film? Would you have liked to see the hedge animals or not?
Further Investigation
Stigmata When the woman from the bath tub leaves a mark on Danny, Jack tries to rationalize the wound by suggesting it is stigmata. Stigmata is the physical manifestation of wounds on the body that correspond with the crucifixion of Christ. This usually appears on the hands, feet, or wrists, so Danny would not make a good candidate. Click on the image to learn more about it. |
